On 15 February, Labour members and supporters joined environmental campaigners to support Councillor Michael Jones’s call for West Sussex County Council to declare a climate emergency.

Labour is fully committed to building on the commitments in the party’s 2017 manifesto to reverse the scandalous lack of care for the environment shown by Tory and coalition governments. It was great to see Chichester Labour strongly represented on the demonstration, showing that the party’s national environmental policies filter down to local level. Chichester needs Labour district and city councillors to help drive measures to counter the disastrous effects of climate change.

County Councillor Jones (Labour) summed up his climate emergency motion, ‘We simply must protect our future and I believe that the county council is extremely well placed to help deliver this in a practical way, particularly if the UK Government provides funding to help achieve these goals. We need a commitment to these environmental issues in our own interests and it is my hope that by discussing this at Full Council we will also encourage a wider public debate that will focus on what opportunities there are for us locally.’
