Labour Group Leader on Chichester District Council, Cllr Kevin Hughes, has responded to the outcome of the vote on Labour’s Affordable Housing motion at yesterday’s full council meeting.

“The Labour group is disappointed that this opportunity to give hope to the many people struggling with exorbitant private rent has been neutered by a joint amendment from the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

The amendment that passed merely perpetuates the status quo whereby the council is in thrall to the market, which has failed to provide genuinely affordable housing, with property developers still able to dictate policy to the council rather than elected representatives being free to do what is best for their residents.”

Cllr Kevin Hughes concluded his remarks by saying, “However, we do recognise that at least Labour’s motion has pushed the issue up the agenda and we look forward to fighting every inch of the way to get some truly affordable housing in Chichester District.”
